Price Transparency in Action: Three Examples
Health benefits leaders of self-insured employers too often lack reliable data analytics they need to understand healthcare cost drivers, push back against rising prices, and deliver more high-value care for their employees and their families. In 2024, Peterson Philanthropies and Purchaser Business Group on Health (PBGH) — whose members are among the nation’s largest employers — joined forces to address this gap. With funding from Peterson, PBGH designed and successfully tested a data-analytics framework leveraging newly available pricing data, employer claims, and quality-related data. That framework served as the foundation for Peterson Health Analytics’ products. It also led Peterson Health Analytics to name PBGH Advisory Services as its preferred advisory services partner, underscoring the importance of unconflicted guidance for employers who are seeking to take action on the data.
The following are a few examples of how employers have leveraged this work.
The employer’s responsibility — and the payoff
“If it wasn’t clear before to employers, we can’t sit on the sidelines anymore, nor can we delegate this responsibility,” said one benefits leader. “We are responsible because we’re paying for this system.”
Expert data analytics and strategic guidance can transform healthcare purchasing for benefits leaders, helping them move from reactive administration to proactive, strategic, evidence-based decision-making. Employers of all sizes can benefit, but success requires commitment, partnership, and a willingness to challenge the status quo. Those who do can enjoy a new level of confidence — that you’re offering the best healthcare possible for your workers and their families.
